|Great expectations for the Azzurri at Euro 2008 - the reigning World Champions sure drew enthusiasm and support from the numerous Italians in London.
As for the World Cup, Italians of London organised a series of events to closely follow the adventure of the National Football team. Thanks to the exquisite venue, Sfizio, in Holborn, we had the best you could get to ensure proper support to the Azzurri : a central venue, live commentary in Italian from RAI (Italian State Television) and plenty of pizzas, ice cream and delicious stuzzichini to restore energies.
Participation of the Italians was amazing - at the first match, against Holland, we counted around 90 people, which means most of Sfizio was full and many standing. The match against Romania saw a sharp increase to around 120 people. This is was just the beginning, as at the excellent match against France, we clocked to over 160 people which meant it was almost impossible to find a single little space inside. Not to mention the match against Spain...many arrived at the venue over two hours before, leaving us to wonder just what a fantastic event it would have been should Italy have progressed further in the tournament.
As it always happen at the World and Euro Cup, the atmosphere was superb, with many non-Italians joining us to watch the match. We noticed Dutch, Romanians, Germans, Greeks. And even French girls at the victorious match against France (they were however swiftly consoled by numerous Italians guys...). And of course many Spanish friends attended the match against Spain...in the end, we were happy for Spain to reach the final and we are already looking forward to the 2010 World Cup
